A Federal Tax Identification Number (Tax ID Number), is also called an Employer Identification Number (EIN), is a nine digit number in the format “20-3456789” that is issued to businesses by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In most cases, every company operating in any of the 50 U.S. states is required to get one whether it is a 500 fortune company or a small store down the street.

Even though a federal tax ID was originally required only for withholding federal employment taxes, it is now like a social security number for an individual - except it is for businesses. These days most business owners have more than one business.  The way to keep them separate is to get a different EIN for each one. The sales tax ID number is a number you need if you sell taxable merchandise.  The state EIN is an Employer Identification Number.  The universal state business tax  ID is issued as an ID for most businesses that have taxable transactions and or are corporations.  The business tax ID registration is a business tax receipt number all businesses must obtain.
